I wasn’t always here, of course. I’ve lived elsewhere. But I ended up here. My mother was already old then, when I came back home. She simply opened the door and let me in. I had nothing. I didn’t even have a suitcase. It was just me in the clothes I stood in. I’d called ahead, to say I was coming. There was a phone here then. There’s no phone now. I can’t afford it. All right, she said, I’ll see you when you get here. So I got here and she opened the door for me.
